Rudyard Kipling was a very popular writer. However, his ideas about the superiority of the British over non-European people and his support of Britain's empire would make him a controversial writer. Kipling was born in India in 1.865, he died in 1.936, and he was buried in Westminster Abbey.
The novel takes place in the British colonial India.
The main carácter is Kim, a thirteen-year old orphan when the novel starts. His father was a sergeant in a British army, and he had left him three documents. Two of them showed that his father had been a member of a special club. The third was Kim's birth certificate.
One day Kim meets a Tibetan Lama and Kim offers himself as disciple. Kim will travel with the Lama searching for the River of Arrow. The novel shows the initiatory journey of Kim, and also, it is an adventure novel because Kim will work for Colonel Creighton (Head of British spies in India). Kim will participate in a special misión in Northern India, where Russian, French and British interests converge.
This novel shows the variety of India, too (Hindus, Muslims...). This story can be recommended to all public, especially people with curiosity to other countries and cultures.
